Carolyn Jean Whitmire passed away January 21st, 2018 at the age of 75.

William "Bill" Gordon Whitmire passed away a day after his wife on January 22nd, 2018 at the age of 77.

Carolyn was a native of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She was born February 25, 1942 to the late Lawrence C. and Jewell A (Davis) Hager. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister Dorothy A Herbst of Farmington, MO.

William "Bill" Gordon Whitmire passed away a day after his wife on January 22nd, 2018 at the age of 77.

Carolyn was a native of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She was born February 25, 1942 to the late Lawrence C. and Jewell A (Davis) Hager. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister Dorothy A Herbst of Farmington, MO.

Bill was a native of Brevard, NC. He was born November 11th, 1940 to the late William Gordon Whitmire and Elizabeth Sitton. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Nancy Carolyn Whitmire Patterson.

Bill and Carolyn met in Washington DC and later married there on July 3, 1962. Over the next 17 years by planes, trains, automobiles and a couple of boats they resided in or visited 10 countries, 24 states and 1 commonwealth. There were 10 duty stations: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL; Honolulu, Hawaii; Vietnam, Edsel, Scotland; Camp Lejeune, NC; Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico; Rota, Spain and Cherry Point, NC.

After 20 years of dedicated service in the United States Marine Corp, Bill retired and Bill adjusted to civilian life. Carolyn commuted to East Carolina University earning a degree in Business Administration, a minor in Computer Science (the only program offered for computers at the time) in 1980. She graduated Magna Cum Lauda with a position in places at Carolina Power and Light Raleigh. She also passed her CPA exam on the first attempt in the spring of 1981.

Bill and the two boys stayed in New Bern until Jeff graduated from New Bern Senior High School in June of 1981. The day after graduation they left to join Carolyn in Raleigh. Bill enrolled at North Carolina State University for the second summer session of 1981, graduating in June 1984 with a degree in Horticulture Science in 1984.

Bill and Carolyn moved into their home for the next 33 years in April of 1983. David finished high school at Athens Drive in June 1983. Carolyn worked for CP&L for the next 30+ years as the company evolved. Bill worked for Dixon Tom a Toe, a produce wholesale distributor for about 5 years. He then became a Real Estate Broker and Residential Real Estate Appraiser. He and a close friend started an appraisal business together. Bill was proud to bring his children back to NC along with his future Daughter-in-Law Carol and started Whitmire Appraisals. The family business flourished and Bill retired with Carolyn in 2012.

Bill and Carolyn enjoyed working outside, caring for cats and enjoying life and good food with family and friends.

They are survived by their sons, Jeffrey D. Whitmire of Raleigh, David L. Whitmire and wife Carol of Clayton; three grandsons, Daniel, Samuel and Matthew Whitmire; niece Londa Bohl and husband Bill of Bryson City, NC.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, January 28th, 2018 at 3pm at McLaurin Funeral Home, 12830 US 70 Bus. HWY W, Clayton, NC 27520. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
